Community Center Update

The Uintah Recreation District is a special service district formed by a group of citizens who cared about people of Vernal and the surrounding area. In an effort to ensure that fun comes naturally, the District is governed by an eleven member Board of Directors, and managed by a professional staff. The goal of the Uintah --Recreation District is to provide year round recreational opportunities for the community.

MISSION STATEMENT:

Providing high quality services, programs and facilities throughout our diverse community while maintaining financial stability; thereby promoting:

• Pride in our community
• Lifelong healthy lifestyles
• Activities for the whole family
• Youth enrichment and self-esteem

With the publication of the Uintah Recreation’s Programs Guide, the community will have the opportunity to be updated on the construction progress to the new Community Recreation Center. In addition to the artist’s renderings of the new building, we have included a brief overview of what the facility will have to offer the community of Vernal.

Now Open!

Site
The new Uintah Community Center is located just off the intersection of Vernal Avenue and 500 South. The 80-acre parcel of land, when it is fully developed, will be dedicated almost exclusively to recreation-oriented activities.

Building Plan Organization
The 78,000 square foot building plan identifies a variety of activity spaces to be housed in the new center and has been incorporated based on the input and needs of the community.  They are as follows:

  1. Indoor lap pool
  2. Indoor leisure pool with slides and water toys
  3. Climbing wall
  4. Double gym
  5. Running track
  6. Activity areas
  7. Aerobic and dance area
  8. Administrative offices
  9. Childcare
  10. Party rooms
  11. Public meeting area / conference room
  12. Support and storage areas

The intent of the design is to minimize staffing and ongoing operational and maintenance costs. Material selection, mechanical and electrical systems will be designed for ease of maintenance and low operational costs.  The use of natural light and other “passive” energy opportunities will be incorporated where appropriate.  “Ground source” water for the mechanical system in the building is an example of the energy saving strategies that are currently being evaluated for the new facility.

Architectural Expression / Aesthetics
The long, sloping roof forms of the Uintah Community Center are derived from the nearby rock outcroppings at Red Fleet Reservoir.  The interplay of the multiple sloping roofs is similar to the formations that are so prominent at Red Fleet.  The roof forms also provide natural light at key locations in the building, most notably at the indoor pool area.

Material selection and detailing is also influenced by the surrounding landscape.  Discreet use of locally available stone will be used at key locations such as the entry.  Colored concrete block will be used and detailed to depict the stratification that is evident in nearby rock formations.  Other use of materials such as corrugated metal and heavy timber will reflect materials that are commonly found in Uintah County.

A sense of vitality and activity within the building will enhance the user(s) experience and because of the plan’s openness, will provide for greater security.  The running track, located on the second level, will provide a continuing change of views to all the activity areas and the outdoors.  These changing views will enhance the runner’s experience – an approach very different from older facilities where the track was traditionally placed within an enclosed “box.”

The childcare, public meeting and conference areas, along with the kitchen and restrooms, are placed on the entrance side of the “control” desk so that these areas can be used independently from the major activity areas during times when the full community center is not open.
